however despite of most fantastic reporting system - all that we get or do, can go wrong, if the primary data that is fed into the system is not perfect.

that is the reason DQM (Data Quality management is so very Important)

here are few Aspects of DQM that we should take care of (if we take care of SIX points - task is almost done - and important point is DQM is not one time exercise - it is ongoing process):

Completeness:
- is data that is being entered is complete or not ?
- OR what is missing or un-usable ?
- because if data entered is incomplete or un-usable - its of no use.
Conformity
- is data stored in standard format - example email ID OR mobile numbers
- if all mobile numbers of Email IDs are not in standard format - they are almost unusable.
Consistency
- What data is showing conflicting information.
Accuracy
- is your data CORRECT and CURRENT.
- because out of date data is also of no use.
Duplicates
- if data contains lots of duplicates - it can be misguiding.
- example - our opportunies may show that we have 340 opportunities.
But what if out of that 40% are duplicates ? - where are you going to go ?
Integrity
- Unreferenced or missing data is almost useless
- for example you have entered contact/Account - but dont have mobile/email ID - it is useless.

Why we have double taxation VAT + Service tax for software

All of us in IT industry has always wondered why the hell is this happening to us.

And, we try to convince ourselves that there is some mistake in law - which they are trying to solve. But friends, there is no mistake - there is conspiracy.

Try to understand this:

1. if we import software we need to pay customs duty

- which has to be paid upfront (in advance)

AND, this has been happening since very long time in India.

- You import software and you pay customs duty.

Then you distribute the product @ a price where you are absorbing the cost.

let us take an example:

- suppose that you are importing 1 million copies of software which is worth 100 usd.

- Rs. value is around 100 million usd or 450 Crores

- Custom duty would be say for example @ 20% which is 90 crores.

- which is to be paid in Advance, (but might be recovered very very late as per sales cycle)

- but which is not transferred to end customer

- Customs duty is to be absorbed as your COST.

- Sales tax department had been getting VAT / CST on this.

Now consider this :

- You say that this is a service.

- You convince to govt of India, that sir if you receive customs duty that is on cost (which is very low)

- But if you receive service tax - that is always on end price to customer - (which is very high)

- take for example that this particular software (bought for 100 usd)

is being sold i india for Rs. 20,000/-

- So now govt is lured for big revenue. - so they accept this proposal.

- But what does the SW vendor (MNC) get in return:

- they don't have to pay customs duty upfront (in advance)

- they can also transfer the service tax component to end user.

Where as customs duty has to be absorbed in cost.

Then why is Sales tax department not agreeing to this :

1. Just consider who were the parties to this new agreement ?

customs department / MNC vendor (service tax is under customs)

2. Why sales tax department oblige ? (just to loose revenue ?)

Who looses ?

A Lesson for TV lovers !

A teacher from Primary School once asked her students to write an
essay about what they would like God to do for them. At the end of the
day while grading the essays, she read one that made her very
emotional.

Her husband, who had just walked in, saw her crying and asked her,
"What happened?"

She answered, "Read this. It's one of my student's essay."

It read like this… 'O God, tonight I ask you something very special.
Make me into a television. I want to take its place. I want to live
like the television in my house. Have my own special place, and have
my family around me. I want to be the centre of attention and be heard
without interruptions or questions. I want to receive the same special
care that the TV receives when it is not working. Have the company of
my dad when he arrives home from work, even when he is tired. And I
want my mom to want me when she is sad and upset and I want my
brothers to fight to be with me like they fight for the television. I
want to feel that family just leaves everything aside, every now and
then, just to spend some time with me. And last but not least make me
a television in my house because I can make them all happy and

like every TV.'

Why BLX/ULX and impression cannot run simultaneously

Many times our Clients and Channel partners are confused - whether they can use our Enjay UltraminiPC BLX/ULX and Enjay Impression on the same server.

Well the answer is - yes and no.
Yes, because it is possible.
No because it is not advisable (not recommended / Not practical)

See, these two models work on a very different protocols, BLX/ULX run on Virtualisation concept while Enjay Impression works on RDP protocol.

If you run these two protocols on a single server that can be some times very problematic.

We strongly recommend Not to mix these two products on a single server.

And we arrange for pickup of the material.

When we launched Call back in year 2004, the call rates were quite high.

Full day Ubuntu workshop @ SURAT, Gujarat, India

Enjay has always tried its best to promote Linux and Open source with its Partners, Clients & public in general.

Extending this idea further, we did a Full day hands on Workshop on Ubuntu, followed by a seminar on Business Opportunities for IT Dealers in Open source & Ubuntu particularly, on 21st April, 2010. (particularly meaningful on the eve of launch of Ubuntu 10.04)

The main idea was to show how Ubuntu Desktop can be used in Business environment.

This was done in partnership with SITA (Surat IT Association also known as South Gujarat IT Association), which is one of the most dynamic, progressive and active IT Associations of India.

Even though it was held on a normal working day, it was attended by more than 80 participants. This was open for SITA members only. The highlights of this events are as follows :

A full day hands on workshop on Ubuntu Linux, which was attended by Engineers and technical partners of SITA Members.
Presented by Mr. Chaitanya Parekh (Partner Enjay Network Solutions) & Head of Enjay Linux Initiative. (11 am to 5.00 pm)
Followed by a commercial seminar - on Business opportunities with Linux and Open source - Presentated by Mr. Limesh Parekh (myself) (5 pm to 6 pm)
More than 80 participants attended this event.
SITA had arranged for fantastic venue and Lunch and other facilities for the participants.
First 50 participating companies were given a LIVE Ubuntu USB drive FREE.
CDs of Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 were also given to all the participants.
All the particpants were charged a nominal fee of Rs. 200/- to help SITA cover the expenses of the event.

Call Center Ready Thin Client Solutions from Enjay

For a very long time, it was always understood that Thin clients cannot be used in Call centers. And, we had valid technical reasons for that.

However, Enjay has come out with a unique Thin Client Solutions, Which can be effectively used in Call Center environments also.

Requirement of call Center is typically as follows:

They make (voice) calls through a soft phone, and that software requires Audio (Input and output).
However Windows Terminal service allows for Sound Output and but NOT Input.
As a result, you are not able to use that calling software (soft phone).
But, now We have embedded Soft phones into our Enjay Embedded OS.
So now you use your application from the Terminal Service and soft-phone as the Local Application.
Since the soft-phone application is embedded into thin client, chances of its corruption are ruled out.
We also have facility to upgrade the soft phone software, if there is a new release available.
At present we are bundling free and open source soft phones, But if you have some proprietary licensed soft phone, we can bundle that also.

At present this version is available with Enjay Impression 1500 (VIA and Intel Platform).

Backing up selected files in linux

Many times it happens that we need to take back up of some files on routine basis. Now this files may be located in different directories in the filesystem.

Here is a little hack, which we can use to backup the files:

First Create a list of all the files to back in a .txt file

\usr\data\*.cfg
\home\limesh
\home\siddhu

Now save the file as backuplst.txt, Now we’ll use the tar command with an extra input parameter, -T. The upper case T is a parameter that takes a list of files as input.

# tar -zcf backup.tar.gz -T /etc/backup_list.txt

We can make this command a bit smarter using the date command in Linux. Use this command to have Linux automatically insert the date of the backup into the filename of the archive we create. Modify the above command to look something like this:

# tar -zcf backup-`date +%Y-%m-%d`.tar.gz -T /etc/backup_list.txt

Now the archive file containing our backup will have the date, month and year of the backup. This makes it easier to store and retrieve data from our backups.

We can add still more intelligence to this by using the crontab, so that all these files are backed up automatically @ periodic intervals.

Using google to convert Open office files to MS office

Now, you can upload any OpenOffice or MS Office files to google DOCS, and once it is uploaded, it can be downloaded once again using any type of filter that you want

Suppose you receive a Open Office spreadsheet named myspreadsheet.ods and you want to open that in Excel.

Just upload myspreadsheet.ods to google docs, once upload is finished, open it in google docs, then go to file menu --> Download as --> Excel File.

That's it.

And one important question,

How do you convert EXCEL file and open it in Open Office.

DO NOT WORRY, OPEN OFFICE CAN NATIVELY OPEN ALL MS OFFICE FILES, even MS office 2007 files.

XPe based Bio metric security system by Enjay

As you are all aware, that there are unlimited possibilities with Windows XP embedded.

For one of our clients, We have helped them create a BIO Metric

Security system, using Windows XP embedded as a platform.

With support for Web camera, touchscreen & smart card.

The Main features of solution are as follows:

Scenario (requirement of Client):

1. A Bio Metric (Attendance) authorisation system, with FACE recognition.

2. It also has smart card system built in.

3. A person has to just stand before the PC,

- A high end digital Web camera will scan his face

and he is authorised.

4. As a fall back situation, we also have smart card support

built in.

5. Also the system had to run in KIOSK mode

i.e. thru touch screen, (no keyboard / mouse attached)

Challenges / Problems faced :

1. Since MS Terminal Service will not support Web Camera

- We cannot use Linux Embedded.

2. Also the client software which is developed in VB.net

- limits the usage of Linux Embedded.

3. The best alternative left out was using Windows XPe

Solution Provided :

1. We used Windows XP embedded SP2

2. All the drivers for their web camera and smart card reader

were included.

3. The Client software for the bio metrics to work was embedded in the OS.

4. Provided them upgrade option, from where they can update and upgrade their software from time to time.

XPe Advantages for Client:

1. Since the system has now embedded OS, chances of

OS crash are eliminated.

2. It works like an appliance.

3. Even booting time is reduced.

This is the beginning, expect more to come in coming days . . . . .

But the problem with this devices is that you cannot share internet connection with this. (Yes I know that XP Prof has ICS - Internet connection sharing - But what will happen when this host PC is down due to virus.)

So we have included Drivers for these devices and also configured, XP embedded OS to act as a high performance router.

The hardware that we can provide is Industrial grade Mini-ITX form factor, with 1 or 2 lan ports.

These devices are based on Intel or VIA platforms.

So here is, how it works:

You get a XP embedded PC from Enjay.
Give it a fixed IP address.
Just plug in your USB wireless Broadband adapter.
Now in all your Windows & Linux PCs, give this XP embedded's IP address as router and gateway.
And that's it - here you have a perfect and stable router with XP embedded.

Advantages of using this:

High speed wireless can be shared easily.
Since write filter is applied on XP embedded, there are no chance of it getting affected by virus.
If you plan to use some enterprise level SW firewall - even that can be installed here.
Of course, it will need some customisation but it is possible.

XP Embedded FAQ:

Most of the folks dealing with ThinClient have come across this Term :

Windows XP embedded (also known as XPe).

We all know that XPe is an OS which is like XP professional – but embedded.

But there are various doubts. Many concepts are not clear. We are trying to clear all those concepts or mis-concepts by this document.

Even if you are remotely connected to ThinClient business, please read this document thoroughly, it will help you.

What is XPe?

XPe is componentized version of XP professional, which is provided by Microsoft.
There are some 14000 components of XP professional, from which you can choose which components to include and which to exclude.
Examples of components are:

Device drivers.
Windows Applications (like notepad, word pad etc.)
Other third party applications (like SAP Client or Citrix ICA Client)
And lots of other stuff.

What XPe is NOT?

You don't get an installation CD for XPe.
You cannot run "setup CD" and install XPe.
There is a specialized procedure for installing XPe
It is a development environment like Visual Studio.
You select the components from the list and then do the programming to weave them to create an Operating system.
A Windows programmer with good knowledge of C++ / Hardware is required to make an XPe OS.

What is hardware requirement for XPe?

According to M$ minimum XPe memory foot print is 40 MB, but it can hardly do anything in that.
Generally the variants of XPe will require atleast
1 GB RAM
1 GB DOM (Flash memory) or disk space.
So a ThinClient is no longer Thin when you are using XPe

How do we install XPe?

There is a development environment like Visual Studio.
You need to develop the OS by selecting and programming various components of XPe.
Then there is specialized way to install that in the Flash memory / disk

When XPe is required?

If you have any specific windows based application which you want to run "LOCALLY", then you require XPe.
If you need to connect some devices to local ThinClient PC, which are not supported by Linux, then you require XPe.

When XPe is not required?

If you need to connect to your Terminal Server only. And, if nothing to be done locally, then XPe is not required.
If you need to connect to Linux Servers also, then you cannot use XPe, since XP will not be able to connect to Linux Application Servers.
ALWAYS contact us – before deciding this do you require XPe or NOT.

What are licensing issues with XPe?

XPe runtime license is roughly Rs. 5000/-
XPe development license will cost roughly Rs. 50,000/-
However you may not require this – as you are not going to do development work.

We (Enjay Network Solutions) require this.

If you want to connect to Windows Terminal Server – then you ALSO require CAL / TSCAL.

Can I choose Linux Embedded over Win XPe

In most of the cases YES.
If you don't have specialized application which can run ONLY on XP or windows platform – you can always use Linux Embedded.

What is WinCE?

WinCE (Windows for Consumer Electronics) is meant for PDA and mobile phone.
Windows Mobile Edition is based on WinCE.

What is difference between WinCE and XPe?

WinCE is primarily meant for PDA and mobile devices, hence not suitable for desktop applications.
For example:
You don't get full fledge Internet Explorer on WinCE.
You cant install standard desktop applications on WinCE (like MS Office)

Other miscellaneous FAQ:

Can virus attack my XPe PC?

Ofcourse yes, since it is based on XP professional, it is very similar to it.
However Generally it will NOT be attacked.
But it also depends how XPe has been developed by the developer, if they have left loop holes open, then virus can attack.

Is Vista Embedded version available?

NO. it is not.
Infact M$ does not have componentized version of Vista
So they have announced Windows Embedded Standard 2009, which will be based on XPe.
It is next generation of XPe.
And this will require online product activation also.

Can I install my custom applications on XPe?

It again depends on how your XPe has been developed.
XPe Developed by Enjay Network Solutions provides you "Add remove programs" interface.
So that you can install / uninstall any applications that you want.

Can I use USB to boot XPe

Yes, latest version of XPe has option to boot from USB.

Can I use CD-ROM to boot XPe ?

Yes.

Is Network booting / PXE possible?

Yes.

What is "Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs" ?

Can I use XPe as my Desktop OS.

NO, M$ license does not allow you to do that – can be used for embedded systems only.

Using smtp.gmail.com as smarthost for postfix server

Many times it happens that you have installed and configured postfix MTA on your Linux server. However when delivering your messages to outside world - you cannot send it directly from your local server - the chances of those emails landing into spam is greatest.

So the best way is to send all the out going mails to some outside smtp server, and let that smtp server deliver emails to whole world.

Here we have installed postfix email server, and using smtp.gmail.com, as our smtp relay (or smart host). The step by step instructions follow:

Install postfix.
sudo apt-get install postfix
The deb-installer will prompt you to answer a series of questions
1. Type of mail server : Satellite System
2. Mail Name : example.org (the name you want on your outbound mail)
3. SMTP relay host : smtp.gmail.com
4. Postmaster : I left this blank
5. Other destinations : I left this blank
6. Synchronous Queues : your choice, won’t impact the relaying
7. Network blocks to allow relay : default (unless you know what your doing)
8. Mailbox size : your choice, won’t impact relaying
9. Local address : i left this as ‘+’
10. Listen Address : all, your choice

We’re almost done, but need some tweaks in postfix config /etc/postfix/main.cf. Add the following lines to enable TLS and passwords on outbound connections.

smtp_use_tls=yes

smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes

smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd

smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous

smtp_sasl_tls_security_options = noanonymous

And create the /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd with one line (replace the user and password with your own)
smtp.gmail.com some.user@gmail.com:PASSWORD
Rebuild the hash:
postmap /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
Restart postfix:
/etc/init.d/postfix/restart

You can optionally lock down your password file

chmod 640 /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd* chown postfix.postfix /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd*

How to run Multiple Desktop Environments (simultaneously) on UBUNtU Part 1

I have been using Ubuntu for a long time now. I always use and prefer gnome desktop environment. However I find many other window managers which would be very nice to use (atleast try).

So that is the word, I want to try other Desktop Environments (I want to run them simultaneously - CTRL+ALT+F8, CTRL+ALT+F9 etc), But I want my base Desktop Environment to be Gnome.

Note that your default GUI Virtual console is CTRL+ALT+F7

In this article we will try icewm (www.icewm.org), which is very lightweight and extremely beautiful. It also has themes.

Please follow following steps:

sudo apt-get install icewm

after the installation procedure is complete, start a new virtual terminal by pressing CTRL+ALT+F3.

Now login using your username and password. (you may change the user if required)

After loging in give following command

exec /usr/bin/startx /usr/bin/icewm-session -- :2

that's it you should get icewm GUI, (which is generally in CTRL+ALT+F9), if you want to switch back to your gnome session press CTRL+ALT+F7 again.

do I need to defrag my Linux Drives

This question arises to all windows users (who are evaluating and/or migrating to Linux), do I need to defrag my Linux drives?

In general disk fragmentation is not as much of a problem for Linux or Macintosh based computers. (once again, this problem is relevant to Windows Users only.)
Most Linux computers use the ext2 or ext3 file system which is known to be resilient against fragmentation and is not as severely affected when it does occur.
you don't need to "defrag" linux partitions as the fielsystems such as ext3/reiserfs dont really allow the data to become fragmented int he first place.
Disk fragmentation is never an issue in Linux, unless you are using your disk to full capacity. i.e. if your disks are 80% full or less, then you dont need defragmentation.
To sumaries, Linux Filesystems will not get fragmented unless and until you are using your hard-disk to its full capacities.

It means that though Linux may need defragmentation (in case you use full capacities), but not as windows need it. Because both OSes work differently, and they handle File systems differently.

It is advised that you do not manually defragment these types of file systems. It is not required.

Mounting shares in Linux with non-root user

This article specifically applies to Ubuntu 8.10, however it may be used for all other distributions as well.

Generally only root users are allowed to mount and unmount smb (windows) shares. However in general day to day operations at office you will not want all your users to have root access.

However it is very much required that your users should be able to mount network shares. Hence it is required that non-root users should be able to mount network shares typically the shares provided by windows (smb shares).

Just follow these steps and you will surely succeed :

Non-root users dont have right for execution for mount and umount command. (you may also use smbmount and smbumount commands)
following command should solve that:
sudo chmod u+s /bin/mount
sudo chmod u+s /bin/umount
sudo chmod u+s /usr/bin/smbmount
sudo chmod u+s /usr/bin/smbumount
In our example we will use following share which we want to mount on "NetworkMount" folder on users "Desktop"
ServerIP : 192.168.1.99
sharename : data
username : user1
password : 1234
Now consider that logged in user name is "testuser", who has group name as "testgrp"
start a terminal window go to Desktop folder:
cd Desktop/
Create a "NetworkMount" folder if it does not exist
mkdir "NetworkMount"
give following command to mount the share in NetworkMount folder
gksudo smbmount //192.168.1.99/data NetworkMount/ -o username=user1 uid=testuser gid=testgrp
it should ask you for the network password for user user1 - just type that and you are done.

Migrating to Linux

Ok, so you have already studied and decided to go for Linux and dump your Windows environment. So, what do you do next ?

Learning from experience we can draw some basis guide lines for Migration from Windows to Linux.

Problems / Challenges :

# Social / psychological challenges

Windows applications wont run directly on Linux environment.

You dont have alternatives for customised applications.

Specialised Applications using specialsed HW will only work on Windows.

Steps / Strategies required for migration :

Following are time tested strategies, which we were successfully able to deploy to manage Linux Migrations. This can be true for most of the cases that you may come accross.

Lots of analysis and education.

Generally we try to convince Finance / Purchase Managers and System Admins regarding Migration to Linux.
But it is the Users who need to be educated and convinced more.
Also, we consider Hardware to be IT, but rather it is Software which is IT, and when you are migrating Software, you are changing a lot.
A detailed plan is required for migration, which should be drafted after thorough analysis of the current systems.
These two aspects are extremely important.
HIRE A GOOD CONSULTANT TO LOOK AFTER MIGRATION : Remember a great consultant has said this : Migration is most easily done when handled by experts.

Using alternative applications

for almost all standard applications in Windows you will find an equally efficient and evolved application for Linux.
Generally these applications are also "FREE" i.e. Open source.
Ms office can be replaced with Open Office
Internet Explorer can be replaced with Mozilla Firefox.
MS outlook can be replaced with Evolution Thunderbird.
The list is end less.

Using emulation for DOS & Windows

You might still have some customised programs for which you wont find alternatives
here Emulators can come to your rescue.
Linux has DOS / Windows Emulators which can be used to run Windows programs on Linux OS.
CAUTION : it is not 100% guaranteed that emulators will solve your problem, so please check and cross check twice before switching it.

Using Thin Clients.

ThinClients are also best option.
It can provide you alternative applications and emulators all fully configured (ready to use).
These ThinClient OS is also tamper proof, hence it will not get corrupted.
Enjay ThinClient with Enterprise OS is one such example.

Some PC still require Windows

Still more you have applications you can neither find alternatives nor can you run them under emulators.
In such cases it would be wise to stick to Windows PC.
Examples of such applications can be some software controlling your industrial machines or some external devices.
Generally 5-9 % of computers in any general corporate will require to stick to Windows, all others can be easily converted.

Stopping Piracy in India

Piracy in India

there is a report that says 69% of the software in India is pirated, but many will agree with me that it may be 96% also.

Cause of High Piracy

Majority of Software companies are from USA and Europe. Now when you compare standard of living in those continents it is huge different from Indian subcontinent (or any part of world for that matter). These software companies insist on having pricing same as that they have in their native countries, which I think is not logical. - See a normal India meal will cost you 1.5 to 2 USD, where as a normal US citizen may spend round 20-25 USD on his normal meal.

The same is the case with pay checks and business profitability.

Also there is a section of Indian computer uses dont know at the first place that copying software without consent is piracy. So education is primarily what is required for reducing piracy.

Poeple need to be educated benefits of using legal software.

How to reduce Piracy - 1

Firstly we need to persuade people to buy legal software at prevailing prices. which I think will be very difficult to do, simply because the cost of normal PC today (March 2009) is Rs. 15000/- where cost of Basic PC software is Rs. 25000/- (OS - 7500, Office Rs. 16000, AV Rs. 1500). This is something which is extremely difficult to digest.

How to reduce Piracy - 2

The vendors can rationalise the pricing policy, or they come out with versions which are suitable for this segment of users. This can be more viable way, but I am afraid the capitalist from west wont agree to my point of view.

How to reduce Piracy - 3

Open source, is the best and final solution for handling piracy in India. From what we have observed and surveyed for last 3 years is as follows:

91% of the computers in corporate environment can be easily converted to Linux without effecting productivity or loss of work. Just you need some motivation and hand holding. The rest 9% of PCs will require propreitory SW since they use that kind of applications which cannot be migrated to Linux.

Embedded Operating Systems in ThinClient

Slowly but steadily ThinClient technology has been establishing itself in India. (as it had done in West). As the prices of Flash memory (including other hardware) decreased, the use of Embedded Operating system has increased.

OpenSource

This has been grossly enhaced with Linux as open source alternative to embedded Operating Systems. You can have rich user-space applications built into thinclient with help of Open source.

Rich Applications

Think of few years back when you had ThinClients which can only CONNECT-TO-SERVER. But now you find thinclients that can run heaps of productive applications like Office-suite, Email Clients, browser, Audio-Video Chat Clients, Media players etc. Many Customised applications can also be built with ThinClients.

Thinner Vs Faster

Initially ThinClients used to be very meager in terms of computing horse power it included - something like 233 mhz cpu with 16/32 mb ram, and 8/16 mb flash. However now you find thinclients which are 2Ghz, 1 gb ram, 1 gb flash. One wonders where is "THIN" in the ThinClients.

Versative and Secured

One thing has surely improved and that is scope of use and security that a ThinClient can provide. and that is the reason that Govt and even military is using thinclients to maximum extent.
